What could this ticking be?
I have a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

When I try to start my car it makes a ticking noise.

Is this the starter?

When does the ticking sound occur?

If it occurs only before the car starts, it may be the solenoid that passes current to the starting motor.

If the ticking occurs immediately after the car starts and subsides, it may be valves and/or lifters before the lifters have filled with oil and take up the slack in the valve train.
Please provide ideas & experiences for other visitors.
