How important are AWD & 4x4 in snow?
I live near Boston, MA, and I'm shopping for a used car.

It's mainly for highway commuting with no off-road stuff.

I'm thinking about an AWD sedan or an AWD/4x4 small SUV.

Is AWD or 4x4 that helpful for winter driving or will a front wheel drive sedan with 4 snow tires get the job done?

Thanks,

Shwaldo, Boston, MA

I would not recommend it.

I would purchase a good set of snow tires and see if studs are legal in your area.

AWD & 4x4 help you get going but don't aid in stopping. They're a false sense of security.

I have Fire & Rescue experience pulling people out of vehicles going to fast in bad conditions.
